Press Release: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Catholicism

JULIE YOUNG AND FR. ERIC AUGENSTEIN RELEASE “THE COMPLETE IDIOT’S GUIDE TO CATHOLICISM” THROUGH ALPHA BOOKS
INDIANAPOLIS_ When she was asked to pen the new edition of the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism (Alpha Books $19.95) New Palestine resident Julie Young said it was proof positive that God must have a sense of humor.
“When I was little, I was always the kid in religion class who challenged teachers with impossible to answer questions. Now I found myself trying to answer them myself,” she said.
Young, author of Fifteen Minutes of Fame, Famous Faces of WTTV-4, CYO in Indianapolis and Central Indiana and A Belief in Providence teamed up with Indianapolis Archdiocese Vocations Director Fr. Eric Augenstein for the project and said that his insight was invaluable throughout the writing of the manuscript.
“I would have been terrified to have tackled this without him,” Young said. “Although I have been Catholic since I was six and attended Catholic schools all of my life, it’s amazing what all needs to be nuanced and explained in a clear and concise manner.”
Written for a lay reader as well as a scholar, the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism is a helpful guide written from the pulpit as well as the pew. It offers a clear and easy-to-understand look at the history, culture, structure, values and beliefs of the Catholic Church. Young and Augenstein help readers explore: the basic tenents and creeds that the Church is built upon, offer an introduction to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, take readers on a tour of the Mass according to the New Roman Missal, explore the Church’s views on sin, morality, heaven and hell, and offer a guide to prayers central to the Catholic faith.
“Billions of people all over the world identify themselves as Catholics and this book is for those who want a better understanding of the Church, who are looking into the faith, or those who have been away from it for a while,” Young said. “It was really a lot of fun to look at the faith from the outside in and present it in a way that everyone can understand,” Young said.
Young is an award-winning writer whose work has been seen in Today’s Catholic Teacher, The Catholic Moment, and National Catholic Reporter. She is a graduate of Scecina Memorial High School and holds degrees in writing and education from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. She can be found online at www.julieyoungfreelance.com Augenstein is a Cathedral High School graduate and a sacramental minister of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Nashville, IN. He blogs regularly at “Café St. Isadore: Digital Conversations with a Catholic Priest.” (cafestisadore.wordpress.com) The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism is available at Bookmamas in Irvington and wherever books are sold.

Press Release- FIFTEEN MINUTES OF FAME

INDIANAPOLIS_ After six books on local history including The Famous Faces of WTTV-4, Eastside Indianapolis: A Brief History, Historic Irvington and A Belief in Providence, local author Julie Young has branched into fiction teaming up with St. Louis-based Rocking Horse Publishing to release an exciting YA title Fifteen Minutes of Fame on April 11.
Written as a first-person memoir, Fifteen Minutes of Fame is the story of Megan Taylor, a young girl who was plucked from obscurity at the age of 15 and transformed into the mysterious rock icon MonAmi. At the height of her fame and on the final night of her farewell tour, the singer runs from the career that made her a superstar and back to her hometown where she sorts through the complexity of living a double life that the rocker says “was hardly the best of both worlds.”
“I was inspired by a lot of young artists, both past and present who hit that super-stratified level of fame at a young age,” Young said. “The pressure is enormous. People are promising you the moon and in a few years it’s all over or they are a train wreck and nobody knows what went wrong.”
Part Hannah Montana; part Roman Holiday, Fifteen Minutes of Fame is a madcap behind-the-music fantasy that will thrill fans of Meg Cabot and Jen Calonita. Young said that after writing several non-fiction titles over the years, it was time to do something different.
“This one is for the kids,” she said. “I wanted to write a story that would remind me of the rock and roll dreams I had when I was a teenager.”
Like her main character, Young began performing at a young age and longed for the musical lifestyle she writes about in the book, but is quick to point out that is where the similarities end.
“I never could have lived MonAmi’s life,” she laughed. “My parents never would have signed the contract!”
Young said that she is excited to have partnered with Rocking Horse for her first YA publication and is currently working to schedule personal appearances throughout the country this summer.
“Fifteen Minutes of Fame is ready to rock, are you?” Young said.
Fifteen Minutes of Fame (ISBN: 9780991969576) is available in both hardcopy and ebook format at amazon.com, bn.com and other major retailers. For more information or review copies, contact publisher@rockinghorsepublishing.com

Tribute to Bob Carter (the creator of "Sammy Terry")

For over 50 years, he's been Indiana's Prince of Darkness and the King of the Hoosier Un-Dead. I remember watching every Friday night at 10 p.m., as "Sammy Terry" would rise from his coffin and offer his television audience a sinister-sounding "Good Evening" before waxing poetically about the things that go bump in the night. With cheesy special effects, B-level films, the eloquence of an English professor and the creepy cadence of Vincent Price, "Sammy" was more than a television host, he was a local legend.
Like many kids who grew up watching Sammy Terry on WTTV-4, I had my reservations about the character, but in time I learned so much about the man behind the makeup and discovered that Sammy Terry was only one of his many accomplishments. Bob Carter, the creator of the iconic character, was a talented musician who shared his love of music with the community through the Family Music Center on Shadeland, he came up with one of the best known slogans in fast food history, he was a substitute for Dick Clark on American Bandstand and he was a loving husband and father to his family.
I was sad to learn of Bob's passing this afternoon, but I am beyond grateful that he lived long enough to know that he was showcased in a book that paid tribute to his life and his work. I have been in touch with the family and expressed my condolences and while Bob rests after a life well-lived..."Sammy" will live on to wish us many more "Pleasant Nightmares" now and in the future!
